A community that’s rich in history
Mechanicsville, Virginia is located just 15 minutes from downtown Richmond. It’s home to roughly 36,000 residents. That may seem like a lot, but when you consider that the city spans 28 square miles, there is clearly a lot of open space. Mechanicsville was settled by English colonist in the 17th century and is home to the Shelton House, which is where Patrick Henry reportedly married Sarah Shelton in 1754.
Although the area is rich in colonial history, it’s probably best known for the major battles that took place during the American Civil War. In fact, Tarwood Estates is just a few miles from Cold Harbor, site of one of the fiercest battles ever fought and a decisive victory for General Lee’s confederate forces. To find out more about this historic area we invite you to tour the Cold Harbor Battlefield, which is open daily from 9:00 am–4:30 pm. For more information, visit the Richmond National Battlefield Park website or call 804-226-1981.
